At IPMA Level B, we offer four different certification paths – depending on the type of complex assignments you have experience leading – projects, programs, portfolios, or agile initiatives
IPMA Certified Senior Project-, Program or Portfolio manager
IPMA Level B is the certification for experienced leaders who have demonstrated their ability to take responsibility for large, complex projects with numerous stakeholders, high uncertainty, and significant impact on the surrounding organization. It is an international recognition of your proven competence, strong leadership, and the ability to deliver results – even in challenging contexts.

IPMA Certified Senior Agile Leader
IPMA Certified Senior Agile Leader is for those who possess agile competence and have the experience and ability to lead complex assignments. As a Senior Agile Leader, you create an environment where collaboration, adaptability, and continuous improvement are deeply rooted in the team’s culture.
- Focus on an agile mindset (being agile) rather than just methodologies
- Emphasis on leadership and behavior
Entry critera for IPMA level B
For an IPMA Level B certification (regardless of the domain) you must meet the following requirements:
A minimum of five years experience as a project/ program/ portfolio manager or an Agile leader of which at least three years were in a responsible leadership function managing complex projects/programs/portfolios or assignments.
Experience may be counted up to 8 years back in time. Periods of illness, parental leave, or line management positions can extend this period up to 12 years, provided they are supported by valid documentation.
Certification process – Level B
1. Introduction
We will guide you through the entire certification process and everything you need to know in approximately two hours.
2. Submitting your application
Four weeks after the introduction, you will submit your application, detailing your competences and experience in relation to the IPMA Individual Competence Baseline (ICB). We recommend starting your application well in advance to allow yourself the opportunity to produce a thorough and well-considered submission.
3. Written exam
The written exam consists of 10 open-ended questions based on the IPMA competence areas. The exam is conducted digitally and the duration is 3 hours.
4. Submitting your report
You will submit a report detailing your leadership challenges and how you managed them within a complex assignment.
5. Interview
The interview includes a comprehensive review of your entire certification process, where the assessors will ask supplementary questions. You should also be prepared to give a brief presentation of your report. The interview lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
6. Certificate
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognized certificate, a digital badge, and your name in IPMA’s Register of Certified Professionals.
